The eighth international transdisciplinary\nsymposium\u00a0"Bioethics and the Aporias of the\nPsyche"<\/em>\u00a0was held at the\u00a0Faculty of Philosophy\nand Religious Studies of the University of\nZagreb.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Amigdala Center co-organized this year's\nevent together with the Center for Bioethics at\nthe Faculty of Philosophy and Religious\nStudies of the University of Zagreb, the\nCroatian Bioethical Society, the Croatian Institute for Research and Evaluation of Mental\nHealth (HIIEMZ), the Scientific Center of\nExcellence for Integrative Bioethics, the\nAndrija \u0160tampar School of Public Health at the\nFaculty of Medicine of the University of\nZagreb, the Croatian Philosophical Society,\nthe Croatian Association of Mental Health\nOrganizations (SUMEZ), the International\nAcademy of Sciences and Arts in Bosnia and\nHerzegovina, and the Croatian Association for\nPhilosophical Practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The themes of this year's symposium at the\nFaculty of Philosophy and Religious Studies of\nthe University of Zagreb included the culture of\nempathy and mental health, philosophical\npractice focused on working with special\ngroups, existential psychotherapy in a\ncontemporary context, and the improvement\nand protection of mental health in the\ncommunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The symposium follows a long-standing\ntradition of interdisciplinary and\ntransdisciplinary meetings and dialogues\namong experts from various disciplines,\nranging from psychology, psychiatry, and\nsociology to philosophy, neuroscience,\nanthropology, religious studies, theology, law,\nand various cultural and artistic domains,\nexplained Asst. Prof. Luka Jane\u0161, PhD.<\/strong>president of the symposium's\nOrganizing Committee, to the Universitas\nportal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts and enthusiasts are gathered\non the platform of bioethical sensitivity,\nfocused on evaluating and resolving\nissues related to the human psyche\nand mental health in general. With a\nspecial focus on the destigmatization\nof people with mental health difficulties\nand the destigmatization of those\nworking within the psychiatric system.\nAs every year so far, the goal is to\ninitiate various projects and initiatives\nof general social significance related\nto the protection of mental health of\nindividuals and society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year's symposium brought together\npresenters from 13 countries, with plenary\npresentations delivered by: world-renowned\nDanish philosopher Dan Zahavi on the topic\n"To Be You \u2013 or Not," the most cited Croatian\npsychiatrist, emeritus Miro Jakovljevi\u0107, with a\ncontribution titled "The Culture of Empathy and\nthe Promotion of Mental Health," Spanish\npractical philosopher Jos\u00e9 Barrientos-Rastrojo on "Philosophical Interventions in the Third\nSector (from prisons to associations working\nwith impoverished children and teenagers,\naddicts, prostitutes, and immigrants)."<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serbian psychiatrist Danijela Tiosavljevi\u0107\naddressed the plenary session with the topic\n"Sources of Moral and Amoral Behavior \u2013 Are\nMoral Revolutions Possible?", and Croatian\nJesuit, psychologist, and theologian Mijo Niki\u0107\npresented "Empathy and Mercy in Integral\nAnthropology."<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presentation program was enriched with\ninteractive workshops and the presentation of\nthe collection of works "Philosophy, Bioethics,\nand Mental Health."<\/em>The official languages of\nthe symposium were Croatian and English.\nThe symposium was held in a hybrid format,\nincluding live presentations and an online\nmodule. Participation in all sessions and\nworkshops was free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
