Psychotherapy Propedeutics

About the education

Do you want to practice psychotherapy in Croatia but don't have the appropriate higher education?

Education in Psychotherapy Propaedeutics is one of the conditions prescribed by the Law on Psychotherapy Practice in Croatia for issuing a license to a counseling therapist, granting the right to practice psychotherapy. Individuals who want to become counseling therapists enroll in Psychotherapy Propaedeutics to acquire basic knowledge and skills before, during, or after specialized psychotherapy training.

The education includes basic theoretical and practical introductory training in the field of psychotherapy when the trainee does not meet the formal education requirements for a psychotherapist. It is regulated by the Croatian Chamber of Psychotherapists, a professional body responsible for setting standards, ethical guidelines, and regulating the work of psychotherapists and counseling therapists.

The Psychotherapy Propaedeutics program covers education in the fields of psychology, medicine (psychiatry), social work, and rehabilitation sciences, consisting of the necessary knowledge, skills, and practical work required for the practice of psychotherapy, which the Amigdala Center has been conducting since 2021.

The Psychotherapy Propaedeutics program of Amigdala Center is verified by the Croatian Chamber of Psychotherapists.

After fulfilling all obligations (completed courses and practical work), the Amigdala Center issues a Certificate to the participant as proof of successfully completing the Psychotherapy Propaedeutics Program. Along with the Certificate, a Certificate Supplement is issued, containing additional information about the completed courses and practical work. The participant later submits the Certificate and Certificate Supplement to the Croatian Chamber of Psychotherapists when sending documentation and completing the application for registration in the Register of Counseling Therapists.

The Amigdala Center has opened enrollments for a new group of psychotherapy propaedeutics participants. Applications are received via the Amigdala Center's website or via email at info@amigdalacentar.hr.

Implementation plan

Theoretical classes are held in person at the Faculty of Philosophy and Religious Studies, University of Zagreb (Jordanovac 110, Zagreb) on average every other weekend.

For groups of participants who begin their theoretical instruction in the spring, the theoretical part of the program will be organized into two semesters, from March to July and from September to January. For groups starting their theoretical instruction in the fall, the theoretical part will be organized from September to January and from March to July.

Professional practice is mandatory for all participants, and the collection of these hours is scheduled for the third semester after completing theoretical instruction and passing exams. However, it is possible to attend a certain number of practice hours earlier, with the consent of the institutions that accept participants for practice. According to the new Regulations, participants are required to complete 20 hours of practice in preschool institutions, 20 hours in school institutions, 30 hours in social welfare institutions, and 30 hours in organizations for outpatient mental health care. Amigdala Center provides participants with practice in institutions with which it has cooperation agreements. Participants can also suggest institutions where they would like to complete their practice, and the Amigdala Center will need to establish a cooperation agreement with these institutions.
